Chapter Five

“Man, I still can’t believe you’re marrying Traci in less than two months. Hell must’ve frozen over,” Garrett said to Sean as they tried on tuxedo jackets.

Chuckling with an amused smirk, Sean straightened his bowtie while staring at Garrett through the mirror. “It definitely did because I’ve been sent an angel from heaven. Honestly, I thought you’d be the first to take the plunge.” Pausing, he lifted his champagne glass from the table and took a sip. “Then again, I never thought I would travel down this road, but I’ll make sure to toss the garter your way so you can be next.”

Sliding the snug tuxedo jacket off and grabbing one size up from the rack, Garrett shook his head with a sarcastic laugh. No need to toss him the garter. Heck, he was already married. He couldn’t believe he still hadn’t told Sean, but he wasn’t aware of his relationship with Zaria. Sean only knew of Garrett’s initial interest in her and thought that Zaria had a disdain for him. They’d agreed to keep it between them, and he respected that even though he wanted more with her. Always had. He never thought he’d fall for her in the way he did, but she was an amazing woman. He loved her ambitious and goal-oriented nature as well as her take-charge, independent personality.

Even though everyone in their circle considered her sassy with a diva attitude, Garrett witnessed a side of her that was warm and caring, almost nurturing. It was a side she kept hidden, because according to her growing up in a rough neighborhood in Memphis, she always had to keep her tough exterior on display. She refused to let anyone hoodwink her and her wall stayed up the majority of the time. Luckily, there were times when he was able to knock it down and he saw the real her.

Garrett knew she was the one for him when his mother was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer two years ago and the sweet side of Zaria came alive. He’d been stressed and miserable on the inside while trying to stay positive for his family on the outside. One evening, Zaria stopped by his home with all of his favorite dishes because he’d lost his appetite, and she’d commented that he’d lost weight. She made sure he ate and had prayed over him when he fell asleep on her lap. During his mother’s chemo treatments, he would go with her and every time, he’d receive a positive, encouraging text message from Zaria. She’d even sent roses to his mother because they’d met at a few events and liked each other. Once he learned his mother’s cancer was in remission, Zaria was the first person he called to thank for being supportive of him.

“You can toss the garter to one of your single cousins in Atlanta.”

“Trust me, the Chase men have a little chase left in them. You know the sales lady was giving you the stare down when we walked into the tux shop.
